The Smallness and the Greatness

Updated: Sep 10, 2023

Mineral Gulch, Utah (4/19/2022)

The Background:

This photo was taken in a remote slot canyon in Utah called Mineral Gulch. At first, I took this picture without anyone in the scene, but it really didn’t capture the dramatic height of the canyon walls. I decided that I wanted to include myself in the scene to give it that scale. I had the camera on a tripod and set the ten second timer – however, the first time I tried, I didn’t quite make it far enough into the scene. By the second attempt I was able to get myself into the picture and capture the scale and beauty of this amazing place.

The Message:

We may feel that we are insignificant in comparison to the works of G-d. We see a scene and it reminds us of how great G-d is and how small we are. While it is important for us to remind ourselves of that occasionally, it is also important to remember that we, as human beings, are the only ones who are capable of recognizing the wonders of G-d's creations - to appreciate the beauty, the grandeur and the spirit that exists in nature. So, while we may feel like nothing compared to G-d, we are also everything - and have a special mission to appreciate and to share G-d's wonders.
