Reflecting the Light

Updated: Oct 27

Island in the Sky district of Canyonlands National Park, Utah

The Background:

I captured this scene in the Islands in the Sky district of Canyonlands National Park at sunset. Sunset is one of the most spectacular times of the day for landscape photography. The lower angle of the sun, along with the color of the light, really brings out the beauty in the scene. I see many people taking pictures of the sunset itself – but I am often facing the opposite direction, trying to capture how the setting sun reflects off the surrounding scene.

The Message:

How do we perceive G-d’s light in this world? It may be overwhelming (not to mention unsafe) to stare straight at the sun – but the reflected light of the sun creates the most amazing glow. I think that is our role in this world as well – it is our job to reflect G-d’s light. We can express G-d’s love through our kindness to others, we can lift up those who are down, help those that need it and see the best in everyone. Reflected light is warm, it is bright, and it enhances everything around it – we should make it our mission to be the same. Our goal should be to share our warmth, our positivity and to build up everyone around us. I think if we try to do that – even if we fall short – we will make the entire world a more beautiful place.
