The Background:
I took this photo in Bryce Canyon National Park several years ago while on a Fall Photography Workshop. I have really struggled to find a shot that I feel captures the sense of this unique location. I am not sure that this photo does so, but I wanted to celebrate the beautiful gift of this scene even if I am still trying to find that perfect shot.
The Message:
I am leaving for a photography trip tomorrow and, as I approach these trips, I often stress about all the factors that need to be considered to try and capture the most spectacular scenes. I worry about being in the right place at the right time, making sure the lighting is perfect, using the ideal camera settings and employing the right techniques. I have to remind myself that I don’t control the outcome – even with all the right physical and mental preparation – at the end of the day, those magical moments and powerful images are a gift from G-d. My job is simply to show up – to get out there with my camera in my hand and be ready to receive that gift. The more I can prepare myself to simply be open to the experience and the moment, the more I can feel the joy of being a receiver rather than the worry of being a creator.
