Gradual Growth – Dramatic Change

Yosemite National Park, California (8/22/2024)

The Background:

I took this shot very early in the morning at Valley View in Yosemite Valley, California.  I arrived while it was still dark and had the chance to capture some images both before and after sunrise. I love the unique view of this scene with some light on the horizon, but most of the scene still in the dark.  The silhouette of the mountains along with the reflection in the water and the one small rock jutting out from the middle of the lake created a magical balance in this photo.

The Message:

Often when I start photographing before sunrise while the scene is still mostly dark, it can be very difficult to perceive the gradual lightening of the view.  I know the sun is coming up, but it can feel like I am just taking the same photo over and over without any perceptible difference.  However, at some point, it hits me that the scene is no longer dark, and it has completely transformed.  Something was happening all along, but I just wasn’t seeing it as it was happening.

I think the same thing occurs when we are working on ourselves.  We may put endless hours into our own self-improvement without being able to perceive any changes.  It seems like all of our efforts have not accomplished anything – we can’t see any light, progress or hope.  However, if we stick with it, there often comes a time when we suddenly see the results.  We didn’t realize that the scene was getting lighter all along – that our work was actually improving things – we may not have been able to feel it as it was happening, but it was helping.  It is so important to remind ourselves of this lesson – keep putting in the effort, never give up on yourself – you may not be able to see it now, but you are bringing in the light.
